Hostel Raiding

As a young guy I find one of my biggest expenses is food! It’s so easy when you’re travelling to spend a bunch simply by eating. Gone are the big grocery markets of home where you stock up and cook a bunch of food for yourself. One of the easiest ways to save on food costs is by simply cooking at hostels. Most have good kitchen facilities. But you can step it up a level by not even needing to buy most of your ingredients in the first place! This is what I call Hostel Raiding!

Just to clarify, this does not mean stealing other people’s food! Most hostels will have “free food” cupboards or shelves in the fridge. Most travellers negate to check these shelves or cupboards, but this makes them a better prospect for you!

You can generally find day old bread, half cartons of milk, numerous spreads, rice and pasta in these free food areas, which are everyday staples for most people anyway. Add a few veggies to the mix and you’ve got yourself one of the cheapest and easiest meals around.

I go into a lot more detail about hostel raiding as well as cheap other ways to find yourself food on the road. Check out my book on amazon for tips on everything from dumpster diving to the best ways to get cheeky discounts at grocery stores!
